reason why I married the matter through. If I hadn't pushed the matter through by exercising my discretion re sureties and if they had not produced sureties satisfactory to me, the matter might still be outstanding.

No Treasurer. You passed 17.9.12: the file as the estate being in order: Mr. Alim Khan was trusted entirely: he wrote in December: the delay showed no blame to anyone.

24.12.12. Answer from the Land Officer; probably opened by me and passed out to Alim Khan; there is nothing in the file to show that anything further was done by Alim Khan nor till after he left: Mr. A. K. should have pushed it on.

To Alim Khan. The pauper cases were dealt with by you and others: in Chinese case taken up by you, I cannot say how far you would have to have Chinese assistance: I really can't say; I do not

know.

Shak Juk's case: in this case there was loose correspondence but I have not found anything else: I do not know where this was found or by whom: I do not know; it may have been left by you in its proper place: a petition was filed on January 8th., 1913,

according to an entry in the Fee-book (lir. Alim Khan asks to see this and agrees to look at it at the Court). This correspondence shows that I wrote to P. 7. D. on 29th. April, 1912. There might be a quantity of correspondence about a case and yet no petition and no file: the letter of 29th. April, 1912, is in my hand- -writing: D. P. V. replied 12.8.12 saying he understand informa-

-tion asked for was no longer required: I don't know who had told

him this. I don't know if you reported ur. Dillon a Land Bailiff

over this matter; I remember nothing about the case. There is

a note as to the validity of the sureties dated 14th. Lay, 1913,

and a further note saying they were no good 20th. Lay, 1913; there

is nothing in this case to show any blame or delay to Mr. Alim

Khan on the time question.

If there was no petition there would be no file: and every

document filed appears as to its fee in the fee-book: you paid

the whole of the money back on 9th. August, 1913.
